church of the heavenly rest

A well known fifth Avenue landmark, the Church of the Heavenly Rest opposite the 90th street entrance to Central Park and the Carnegie Mansion, has been a fixture on the Upper East Side since 1868. The exterior of the limestone-clad church has all the features of a classic Gothic church, with a distinctly Art Deco touch, echoing the many skyscrapers in Manhattan.

The interior of the church is the perfect blend of these two aesthetics, with large open airy spaces, gothic details, and Arts & Crafts era stained glass windows flooded with light. The Church of the Heavenly Rest is lucky to be surrounded by mostly low-rise buildings, giving their glorious stained glass-windows plenty of exposure and bathing the chapel in glowing jewel toned light from their full scale rose window.

Located on Museum Mile, his Episcopal Church is an important part of this Carnegie Hill community and has an extensive variety of Community outreach programs including one for Prison Reentry and  Music and Arts.

This large Gothic inspired Church seats more than 900 people and also features a full scale pipe organ, and a smaller one in the chapel. The organs, pews, choir stalls and other woodwork have been meticulously and lovingly restored after a devastating fire in August of 1993, and two half-melted stone arches in the chancel still await restoration.
