church of the holy trinity

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a visual surprise in the middle of a block on East 88th street in Yorkville. The Church complex is a parallelogram with 150 feet frontage and 100 feet in depth which is the equivalent of 11 full city lots. Set in a beautiful urban complex with a garden oasis and a cloister that connects the parish house to the Church, Holy Trinity will soon celebrate more than 125 years of service to a community  that started as a settlement church for the physical and spiritual needs of a growing immigrant population.

Designed by the architect J. Stewart Barney, this beautiful church of mottled golden-brown brick was built in the style of the Loire Valley with touches of 13th century French Gothic and slanted roofs of deep red tile with copper cresting. The large sanctuary will seat more than 400 people and has the added advantage of 17 stained glass windows designed by the English artist Henry Holiday. In addition, the Church also has a small chapel and a large community room that is available for shoots.

There is also a high, open bell tower, 20 feet square and 150 feet high, which rises exactly in the center of the property.  Although large,  the long sides of the bell tower are accented vertically by open belfry slots consisting of deep concentric Gothic arches, and the ornamentation is delicate and graceful. The tower is crowned by a simple eight-sided spire.

The Church remains an important presence for the people of East Harlem and Yorkville.
